Cutting-Edge Research Directions in Power System Protection
Abstract:
Power System Protection is one of the most fascinating, dynamic, and impactful areas of Electrical Engineering, playing a pivotal role in ensuring the secure, reliable, and resilient operation of modern power networks. The rapid evolution of the electric power industry toward smart grids, distributed energy resources, renewable generation, and advanced digital technologies has significantly increased both the importance and complexity of protection systems. As protection functions are indispensable throughout all components of a power system, any change in network topology, equipment, operational practices, or emerging technologies necessitates the continuous reassessment, enhancement, and modernization of protection strategies. Consequently, power system protection has remained at the forefront of research and innovation in power engineering for decades. This presentation highlights twenty cutting-edge research directions in power system protection that have been investigated by the keynote speaker over nearly two decades of research, academic activities, and practical experience in this evolving field.
